Safety FAQ
- Is Vieques safe for tourists?
- Yes. Vieques is a small, community-oriented island with a low crime rate relative to urban Puerto Rico. Standard travel precautions apply. The island has police, fire, and hospital services. The main practical concern for visitors is limited medical infrastructure — serious trauma may require medical evacuation to the Puerto Rico mainland.
- Where is the hospital?
- Centro de Salud Familiar Susana Centeno, Isabel Segunda. Phone: 787-741-0392. For serious trauma or cardiac events, patients are transferred to the Puerto Rico mainland. Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended.
- What should I do in an emergency?
- Call 911 immediately for life-threatening emergencies. Cell service can be spotty in remote areas — landlines are more reliable. Police: 787-741-2020. Hospital: 787-741-0392. Fire: 787-741-2111.
- What should I do during hurricane season?
- Leave Vieques as early as possible — do not wait for a formal evacuation order. Ferry and flight availability disappears rapidly as a storm approaches. Hurricane season runs June through November, peak risk August–October. Monitor NOAA hurricane forecasts daily at weather.gov.
- Are the beaches safe for swimming?
- Most Vieques beaches are safe for swimming, but some have strong currents. Always check conditions before entering the water. Wild horses roam the island freely and should be observed from a distance — do not feed or approach them.
